As Father's Day approaches (June 15th - yikes!) I have been thinking about the special relationship I have always had with my dad. As a child, I wanted to be just like him and I emulated him in all ways possible... even to the point of putting way too much salt and butter on my food :)... something I still do. I wanted to do everything he did... fix things around the house, eat huge dinner portions, spill milk :), watch Star Trek, drive a boat, zone-out into another dimension (if you know my dad and I you'll understand this one), mow the lawn, ski, and the list goes on! I used to talk to my dad about "girl things" too. The sort of thing you would usually only bring up to mom. My dad handled it all very well, considering he was the only male in a house of four women, and has always been someone I have admired. There is just something extra special about a bond between a dad and his daughter. I have seen this special bond reflected in Emma and Chris and I must share with you a recent conversation I overheard:
Emma: I decided I'm not going to get married when I grow up.
Chris: Why not? It's nice being married to someone. I love being married to your mommy.
Me: :)))))))))
Chris cont'd: You wear a ring (obviously he was trying to appeal to a girl's love of diamonds!) and it reminds you about the person you married and how you get to love them and share everything with them forever.
Emma: George (a boy in her class... who is allergic to peanuts) isn't getting married when he grows up.
Chris: Well, you can't trust a boy that doesn't eat peanut butter!
Emma: (hysterical laughter)
Me: :))))))))))
It made me think about how I too went to my dad for advice and how he was always there for me. I can't help but smile thinking of all the times that are to come when Emma will seek out Chris to ask questions about life, get advice, and especially to laugh!
Okay I guess I best hit-up a Hallmark store soon for the father I have always admired and the husband who has fathered my children in a way that inspires me daily to be a better mom.
